Current Projects:

Kirksville on the Quad

Think there’s nowhere to go and nothing to do in Kirksville?  We’re trying to change that.  “Kirksville on the Quad” is a social and economic initiative designed to help showcase the off-campus community in an on-campus location.  In the spring, dozens of local businesses, religious organizations, and social entities will come to the Quad to give students a taste of the town, be it in the form of food, coupons, or event flyers.  We invite you to come and join us, and to learn more about the community in which you live.

Alumni Homecoming Reception

Held on the Saturday of Homecoming Week (the actual “Homecoming” day), this year’s Alumni Homecoming Reception was a small, but successful event which saw two former presidents and about small group of other Senate alums in attendance.  Great conversations and discussions took place, and a good time was had by all who were there.

Senate Presents…An Off-campus/On-campus Colloquium Series

External Affairs is working with the Academic Affairs Committee to create a colloquium series that reflects the interdisciplinary values and Liberal Arts Mission of the University.  This series seeks to combine knowledge from multiple majors about topics pertaining to the community in which Truman Students live, with the end goal being a colloquium series that not only educates but provides examples of real-life applications of how this information is being used.  We strive to have both on-campus speakers and off-campus speakers at each colloquium.

Storm the Capitol

Each year, dozens of Truman Students make a trip to Jefferson City to lobby the Missouri Legislative Body on issues pertaining to Higher Education.  In the past, such issues have included increasing state funding of Truman State University to help lower tuition costs, procuring a student vote on the Board of Governors, and other important topics that reflect students at this institution.  Currently, the agenda is being set for this year’s STC, which will most likely be held in early- to mid-February.

Voter Awareness

The 2008 Presidential Elections are less than one year away, and we want to make sure that our student body is well-informed on all the issues and candidates.  We realize that not everyone is “into” politics, so we want to make the process as fun and exciting as it can be.  One way that External Affairs has decided to do this is to try and create March Madness-style Election Brackets (tentatively titled “November Nuttiness”) and a “Fantasy Election League” that will encourage students to compete with each other to most accurately predict both national and student opinions about both each candidate and each issue.

General Community Initiatives

External Affairs is always open to any opportunity to bring the off-campus and on-campus worlds together.  We are currently working on many various aspects involving downtown development, including, but not limited to, coordinating the first “Lighting of the Square” in December and helping the city put together a brochure of businesses in the downtown district to provide to any interested parties.  We believe that working on these two issues will help increase student awareness and interest in community enterprises, entities, and events.

Mission:

The External Affairs Committee strives to promote communication between the Student Association and the larger society of which it is a part. This committee actively works to: establish and maintain communication with members of the Kirksville community, the Missouri State Government, and the student governments from other Universities in order to share perspectives and gather information, increasing the awareness of the Student Association on issues which impact its well-being in order to create an informed citizenry, exchange information and perspectives with prospective and future members of the Student Association, and gather student opinion on issues that impact the Student Association and the University community.
