Concerning the Assault in Dobson Hall
Dear student body -
I would like to encourage students not to descend into
hysteria because of this one isolated event. From what I
understand at this point, the DPS and the Dobson staff
responded in an adequate manner to the best of their
ability.
The night monitors did their job as they have been
trained and responded quickly so that the villain could
be apprehended.
Tighter security could not have prevented this event
from occurring unless one would advocate placing armed
law enforcement at every dorm entrance. I do not believe
that this is practical nor do I believe that it is in
the long-term best interest of the student body.
Complete security in life is not reality, it is an
illusion, and this event is a sobering reminder of that
fact. All that our community can do is minimize the risk
of individuals being put into harms way. Our Res Life
staff and Department of Public safety take on an
enormous responsibility in helping to provide that
security, but we also must be vigilant on our own.
As it has already been stated, much of this event could
have been avoided by the simple locking of a door. It is
always best to make sure that this is an essential
practice in order to protect yourself and your
belongings. Not locking ones door accrues a higher state
of risk to oneself for which ultimately only that person
can be held responsible.
Please contact myself (mas346@truman.edu)
or Res Life with any questions, comments or concerns
that you might have. If you do believe that a change in
university polices or facilities in necessary please
contact me or JoEllen Flanagan (jaf3154@truman.edu)
as your student government works to represent your voice
on policy issues.
